David M. Weinberg: In a short briefing for MIFF, the Scandinavian pro-Israel lobby: Elimination of the Iranian threat to Israel was long overdue and urgent.
Long overdue – given Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi assaults on Israel; Iran’s two massive missile assaults on Israel over the past year; and Iran’s three-decade long ballistic missile and nuclear buildups and its explicit intent to use them to destroy Israel.
Urgent – because over the past year and especially in recent months Iran moved to near nuclear breakout including enrichment of uranium to military bomb levels and actual weaponization. (In this latter regard, note the unprecedented IAEA denouncement of Iran just four days ago.)
Key targets are:
1. Ballistic missile inventories, launchers, and manufacturing facilities.
2. Nuclear weapons research and production facilities, uranium enrichment facilities and uranium stockpiles, and Iranian nuclear scientific personnel.
3. Iran’s ability to launch ground assaults on Israel. (Yes, Israel has evidence that a next stage of planned Iranian assault on Israel involved army attacks through Syria, Jordan, etc.).
4. Interdiction of Iranian ability to rebuild its military power and nuclear threats. This includes targeted assassination of Iran’s military and intelligence leadership, as we have seen in the opening days of this war.
Ultimately, regime change is necessary, but this is not one of Israel’s explicit war goals. That is up to the Iranian people.
